Career (2007-2012): 64-13-10-10, $77,085

Mr. Ichiban is a well known Pacific Northwest Thoroughbred with 64 lifetime starts at Washington, Oregon and western Canada tracks. His 13 victories came at Hastings, Portland Meadows and Emerald Downs.

Nearing the end of his racing career last fall in Portland, Mr. Ichiban became more than just another mount to current Emerald Downs jockey, Anne Sanguinetti.

"The first time I rode him I had a real bad cold. During the race he was trying hard and I was trying hard and we finished second but right after crossing the wire I started coughing severely. He stopped his gallop-out and stood still … he realized I was having a problem. He then turned gently and trotted back to be unsaddled. We bonded right then and there," said Sanguinetti.

After concluding his career with a victory last December, Sanguinetti was intent on having Mr. Ichiban as part of the family. She happily took him home to California after purchasing him from owner Matteo Ieraci.

Sanguinetti, a horse event rider well before her jockey days, had Mr. Ichiban getting started in a new career right away.

"Two weeks off the track he was doing little jumps. He had a different saddle and different bridle but he trusted me completely. He’s capable of anything!" said Sanguinetti.

After racing for six straight years, Mr. Ichiban’s currently getting some R & R.

"He’s having a great time right now. He’s getting a tan and on a 24-hour buffet. I’m heading back to California when Emerald’s over and we’ll get back to training," said Sanguinetti.

This story is happy and far from ending.

"It’s been great, he’s my best friend - in horse form!" said Sanguinetti.
