Ole's Miss Prevails in $50,000 Kent Handicap

OLE’S MISS SWOOPS IN TO CAPTURE KENT HANDICAP

AUBURN, Wash. (July 19) – Canadian shipper Ole’s Miss out finished a resilient Mylast Sweet Pea and scored a neck victory Saturday in the $50,000 Kent Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by Leslie Mawing at high weight of 120 lbs, Ole’s Miss ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.46 and paid $3.60, $3 and $2.20. L. Tracy McCarthy is the winning trainer for owner Ole Nielsen of Richmond, British Columbia.

Mylast Sweet Pea, a 20-to-1 long shot ridden by Gallyn Mitchell at 115 lbs, nearly pulled off the upset but settled for second, and paid $8.60 and $4.40.

Papa’s Flashy Girl, an even bigger price at 31-to-1, finished a distant third, six lengths behind Mylast Sweet Pea, and paid $4.60 to show.

Find Your Spot, the 9-to-5 second choice coming off a win in the Irish Day Handicap, was a head back in fourth place, followed by Belladiva and Chu and You.

Last in the early going, Ole’s Miss moved into contention on the last turn, and engaged Mylast Sweet Pea into the stretch.

“Chris (Loseth) and Tracy (McCarthy) told me not to panic because this horse makes a big giant move at the end,” said Mawing, who never had ridden Ole’s Miss before Saturday. “I just let her break and she got into position. Once we got to the backside, she was actually dragging on me.

“I didn’t want to move too early, so I held her back. Coming to the three-eighths pole, the pace was crawling, so I let out a little bit more and she just grabbed a hold of the bit. Down the stretch, I let her extend her stride and she did that well. (Mylast Sweet Pea) ran a big race. It wasn’t like we were stopping, that horse just kicked it in. I had to keep an eye on that horse all the way to the wire.”

Ole’s Miss earned $27,500 to push her bankroll to $129,113. An Ontario-bred by Officer, she is 4-1-2 in seven lifetime starts, including two stakes wins this year at Hastings Racecourse.

Mylast Sweet Pea has a series of big efforts at the meet, including a third at 50-to-1 in the Seattle Handicap and a fourth at 7-to-1 in the Irish Day.

“Last time I fought a little run out of her,” Mitchell said. “This time I wanted to let her run into the turn.

“My filly just kept going. She ran a bang-up race. I think she saw the other horse go by her in the stretch, and she just kept digging in. She dug in twice, really. She dug in once at the eighth-pole, and then again inside the sixteenths-pole.”

The next race for sophomore fillies is the $65,000 Washington Oaks at 1 1/8 miles on Saturday, August 9.

NOTES: Kenzie Carolina ($8.20) scored a 5 ¼-length victory in the $14,800 sub-feature for $20,000 claiming fillies and mares. A 5-year-old Oregon-bred by Baquero, Kenzie Carolina ran one mile in 1:35.01 under David G. Lopez for trainer Rigoberto Velasquez and owners Rancho Viejo and Jerry Carmody. . .It was a good day for Oregon-breds, as Jack the Pirate ($8) shipped in from Golden Gate to score in a $12,500 claimer under Rocco Bowen for trainer Blaine Wright and owner/breeder Robert Clary. A 4-year-old Harbor the Gold gelding, Jack the Pirate is 6-for-13 lifetime, including an 18 ¼-length victory in the Oregon His at Portland Meadows. . .Lopez and Bowen rode two winners each on the nine-race card. . .Trainer Mary Pirone notched her first win of the season as 2-year-old filly Seattles Best Copy ($4.40) raced gate-to-wire in Saturday’s second race. . .Live racing continues Sunday with the $50,000 Mt. Rainier Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles and the $50,000 Emerald Express at six furlongs. The Mt. Rainier is the final local prep for the $200,000 Longacres Mile, while the Emerald Express features Trackattacker coming off a track record in his debut last month.
