Stopshoppingdebbie Sets Stakes Record in Boeing

AUBURN, Wash. (July 6) – There simply is no stopping Stopshoppingdebbie at Emerald Downs.

The superstar 4-year-old filly made headlines again Sunday, powering through the stretch for a 2 ¾-length victory in the $50,000 Boeing Handicap for older fillies and mares.

Ridden by Rocco Bowen at 123 lbs, Stopshoppingdebbie ran one mile in a stakes record 1:34.20 and paid $2.40 and $2.10. Tom Wenzel trains the winner for owner/breeder Jerre Paxton (Northwest Farms) of Yakima.

A Kentucky-bred daughter of Curlin-Taste the Passion, Stopshoppingdebbie is 8-for-8, and she has more wins than any undefeated horse in North America.

Stopshoppingdebbie also tied the track record of seven consecutive stakes wins set by Ropersandwranglers16 years ago.

“Stopshoppingdebbie is a special horse and it’s a privilege to train her,” Wenzel said. “Today she ran each of her last two furlongs in :11 and change. It’s tough to catch a horse that finishes like that.”

Stopshoppingdebbie earned $27,500 for the win, pushing her career bankroll to $211,273.

There were a couple anxious moments, however. First she tossed Bowen before loading into the starting gate, and then broke a tad awkward from the No. 1 post-position.

It didn’t matter, though, as Stopshoppingdebbie recovered quickly to wrestle command from Blueberry Smoothie into the clubhouse turn. Settling into a fluid stride, she clicked off middling fractions of :23.80, :47.25, 1:11.02, and then, for the third time in her eight-race career, turned back Goin to the Window in the stretch for the victory.

“The gate was a little issue today and she tried to buck me off, but she’s so good, it didn’t matter,” Bowen said. “She didn’t break her best, but she does that sometimes when she’s toward the inside.

“I got into her a little bit after the break just to get her going early, but then I got her to settle really nicely on the backside. At the quarter-pole, I said ‘Let’s go mama’ and she just took off.

“She’s so versatile,” Bowen added. “She can win on the lead or off the pace. Nothing takes her off her game. I let out a little more of notch this time, but I still haven’t let them all out yet. The winning streak means a lot. As the wins go up, the pressure gets a little higher. I’m just going to try to do my part to keep it going.”

Goin to the Window, ridden by Juan Gutierrez at 118 lbs, paid $3 for place.

“She made another big move on the turn, she tries all the time,” Gutierrez said of Goin to the Window. “What can you say? The winner is a super filly.”

Blueberry Smoothie finished third and Madame Pele was fourth.

Stopshoppingdebbie, Goin to the Window and Blueberry Smoothie—all owned and bred by Northwest Farms—have now taken the top three spots in six stakes at Emerald Downs the last two seasons.

Next for older fillies and mares is the $65,000 Emerald Distaff at 1 1/8 miles on Sunday, August 24.

NOTES: Jockey David G. Lopez escaped serious injury in a first race spill, but was taken to Valley Medical Center for precautionary observation. Tied for eighth in the standings with 14 wins, Lopez was unseated and bounced hard off the racing surface after being tossed from Papa’s Grandkids shortly after the start of the six-furlong race eventually won by Featherlite. Benatar finished second but was disqualified and placed last for drifting into the path of Papa’s Grandkids. . .Seattle Game ($4.80) prevailed in the 10th race nightcap for her 14th career win at Emerald Downs. The 8-year-old mare tied Polish Dollar for most EmD wins by an active horse. . .Leslie Mawing and Bowen rode three winners apiece on the 10-race program, and Mawing maintains a 52-43 lead over Bowen atop the jockeys’ standings. . .Juan Gutierrez rode two winners including a 6 ¾-length score on Mebossman in the $18,900 sub-feature for 3-year-olds. The 2013 Gottstein Futurity runner-up zipped 6 ½ furlongs in 1:14.29. . .Frank Lucarelli led the trainers with three wins—Tsarina Haven ($19), Prayer for Da Bric ($6.40) and Mebossman—and strengthened his hold on second place with 23 wins. . .Trainer Jeff Metz scored the win with Seattle Game, finishing the first half with 34 wins and on pace to break Tim McCanna’s single-season record 66 wins set in 2008. . .5-year-old mare Ms. Sutherland ($32.40) scored her second big upset of the meet, holding off Spot On Babe by a head in the $18,900 sub-feature for older fillies and mares. Trained by Roddina Barrett and co-owned by Barrett and Wayne Williams, Ms. Sutherland has scored gate-to-wire wins this season at 15-to-1 and 12-to-1. . .Forte Feroce, a Texas-bred that debuted with a maiden win at Emerald Downs last month, finished off the board under Anne Sanguinetti in the $50,000 Everett Nevin Stakes for 2-year-olds on closing day of the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meeting. Highway Boss ($21.20) and jockey Dennis Carr prevailed in 1:04.50 for 5 ½ furlongs. . .Live racing resumes Friday with first post 6:45 p.m.
