Unbeaten Stopshoppingdebbie Prevails in WA State Legislators

    STOPSHOPPINGDEBBIE DOES IT AGAIN,
    PREVAILS IN WASH. STATE LEGISLATORS

AUBURN, Wash. (June 8) – Superstar 4-year-old filly Stopshoppingdebbie remained perfect Sunday, turning aside stable mate Goin to the Window for a half-length victory in the $50,000 Washington State Legislators Stakes for older fillies and mares.

Ridden by Rocco Bowen at high weight of 123 lbs., Stopshoppingdebbie ran 6 ½ furlongs in a stakes record 1:14.20, and paid $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10. Tom Wenzel is the trainer for owner/breeder Northwest Farms (Jerre Paxton, Yakima, Wash.)

Stopshoppingdebbie is 7-for-7 with lifetime earnings of $183,773, including $27,500 for Sunday’s victory. She has won, in order, the Seattle Handicap, Irish Day Handicap, Kent Handicap, Washington Oaks, Hastings Handicap and Washington State Legislators Stakes. The latter two were vs. older fillies and mares, a division she clearly dominates, and there have even been rumblings she could face males in the August 24 Longacres Mile.

Goin to the Window made her stable mate earn the victory Sunday. Rallying from fifth in the six-horse field, Goin to the Window chased Stopshoppingdebbie through the stretch and, for a moment, had jockey Juan Gutierrez believing they were about to dethrone Stopshoppingdebbie. It wasn’t to be, however, and Stopshoppingdebbie prevailed.

“She had a lot more horse than it looked like,” Bowen said of the winner. “She didn’t get home by a big margin, but she had a lot more horse left. With these types of horses you don’t need to win by 10. She’s got a heart of a champion, a heart of a lion, and a heart of a colt.”

Breaking from the outside No. 6 post-position, Stopshoppingdebbie stalked Blueberry Smoothie, Finding More and Madame Pele, as the leaders set fractions of :22.70 for the quarter-mile and :45.22 for the half. Stopshoppingdebbie advanced four-wide into the lane, gained a short advantage in mid-stretch and held off Goin to the Window for the victory.

Gutierrez said the runner-up ran a big race.

“Next time we're going to beat (Stopshoppingdebbie),” he said. “My filly ran huge. She relaxed early and finished great. I'm full of confidence with her. For a second, at the three-sixteenths-pole, I thought we had her.

“It's just not easy to beat a horse that good. Next stake is a mile and that'll be good for my filly."

Goin to the Window paid $6.20 and $3.40.

It was two lengths back to Blueberry Smoothie in third place, and a $2.60 show payoff. Blueberry Smoothie, like the top two finishers, is trained by Wenzel and bred and co-owned by Northwest Farms. It marked the fifth time in two seasons that Stopshoppingdebbie, Goin to the Window and Blueberry Smoothie finished first, second and third in an Emerald Downs stakes race.

Madame Pele, Tabled With Gold and Finding More completed the order of finish.

The $50,000 Boeing Handicap at one mile is next for older fillies and mares on Sunday, July 6.

NOTES: Congratulations to Seattle Times sports writer/handicapper Scott Hanson for a flawless call of Regal Valid’s ($7.20) victory in Sunday’s sixth race. . . Private Boss ($4.60) won the 2-year-old colts & geldings race by 5 ¾ lengths in :51.44 for 4 ½ furlongs and Fine Red Wine ($27.40) won the 2-year-old filly race by 1 ½ lengths in :51.96 for 4 ½ furlongs. . .Trainer Roy Lumm saddled two winners including Private Boss. . .After nine weeks of racing, Jeff Metz holds a 27-17 lead over Frank Lucarelli in the trainers’ standings. . .Javier Matias and Ronald Richard each rode two winners Sunday. . .Leslie Mawing leads Bowen 34-31 in the jockeys’ standings, with defending champion Isaias Enriquez third with 24 wins. . .Live racing resumes Friday with first post 6:45 p.m.
