STOPSHOPPINGDEBBIE RETURNS IN $50,000 HASTINGS HANDICAP,
FIRST OF 29 STAKES RACES AT EMERALD DOWNS IN 2014

AUBURN, Wash. (May 4, 2014) – Emerald Downs begins its 29-race stakes schedule with the $50,000 Hastings Handicap for older fillies and mares on Sunday, May 11.

To be run at six furlongs, the 19th running of the Hastings Handicap is first of four open stakes this season for older fillies and mares, culminating with the $65,000 Emerald Distaff at 1 1/8 miles on Sunday, August 24.

Nine horses are nominated to the Hastings, topped by Northwest Farms’ undefeated 4-year-old filly Stopshoppingdebbie, a daughter of Curlin who made history last year by sweeping the four-race series for sophomore fillies. Stopshoppingdebbie is 5-for-5 lifetime for trainer Tom Wenzel, earning $128,773 for owner/breeder Northwest Farms (Jerre Paxton).

Goin to the Window and Blueberry Smoothie, also trained by Wenzel and co-owned by Northwest Farms, are expected to again challenge their stable mate in the Hastings. Both have sterling records of their own—a combined 15-of-15 in the money—and finished second and third in all four stakes here last year.

Multiple stakes winner Madame Pele, winner of the March 29 Mesa Handicap at Turf Paradise, is one of two fillies nominated by trainer Jim Penney. Madame Pele also captured the Comcast Sports Net Stakes on Washington Cup Day last year at Emerald Downs.

Finding More the state champion 2-year-old filly in 2012, joins the Penney barn after compiling a 4-for-11 record as a 2-year-old and 3-year-old in Louisiana and Kentucky,

Quizzical, the state champion 3-year-old filly of 2012, also is nominated to the Hastings. A 5-year-old daughter of Cindago, Quizzical has faced many of Southern California’s fastest filly and mare sprinters and scored two allowance wins for trainer Mark Glatt.

Stephanie Plum and Ms. Sutherland come off sharp victories at the current Emerald Downs’ meet, but both would be facing tougher foes in the Hastings.
