Leslie Mawing Rides Five Straight Winners

AUBURN, Wash. (May 2, 2014) – Spot On Babe held off Clemens Brook in a driving finish for a half-length victory Friday in the $12,700 feature race for older fillies and mares at Emerald Downs.

With Leslie Mawing riding his fourth of a record five-straight winners Friday, Spot On Babe ran 5 ½ furlongs in 1:02.42 on a fast track and paid $3.60, $2.80 and $2.60. Frank Lucarelli is the trainer for owner Ron Crockett Inc.

Mawing rode the final five winners of the seven-race card, breaking the track record of four wins in a row held by several riders.

Mawing swept races three through seven, scoring triumphs aboard Nancy Wake ($9.60), Our Pretty Woman ($8.40), He’s a Cruiser ($7.80), Spot On Babe and Making Fire ($9.20). Mawing, 40, has 2,125 career victories and is No. 6 all-time with 507 wins at Emerald Downs.

“When I looked at the (Daily Racing) Form I knew I had pretty live mounts tonight,” Mawing said. “I’ll say this much, I didn’t know it was going to be this good.

“I’ve won six in a row before, but never on the same day,”

Seth Martinez in 2008 and Kevin Radke in 2002 share the track record of six winners in a day at Emerald Downs—but they accomplished their feat on 10-race programs, and neither rode five winners in a row.

Spot On Babe joined Always the Same, Cha Cha Latte and Vegas Burn as two-time winners at the seven-day-old meeting. A 4-year-old Washington-bred by Tribal Rule, Spot On Babe is 4-0-0 in seven lifetime starts with earnings of $31,422, including $6,985 for Friday’s victory. Clemens Brook, a 15-to-1 long shot ridden by Jennifer Whitaker, battled Spot On Babe the length of the stretch but settled for second place. Clemens Brook paid $12 and $8.40.

Kenzie Carolina, with Ronald Richard riding, finished third and paid $4.60 to show. Seventyprcentcocoa, Run Sophia Run, Agoodlawyer Willdo and Better to be Lucky completed the order of finish.

NOTES: With his five-win night, Mawing leapfrogged into second place in the jockeys’ standings with 12 wins, two behind Rowen Bowen, who had his first winless day of the season. . .21-year-old trainer Howie Gibson posted his first two-win day at Emerald Downs as Sweet Sara Brown ($5) and Our Pretty Woman ($8.40) scored gate-to-wire triumphs in races one and four. . .Not to be outdone, trainer Vince Gibson saddled the first and second-place finishers of race five, with He’s a Cruiser ($7.80) edging stable mate Buds a Flyin for the victory in 1:09.87 for six furlongs. . .Live racing continues Saturday with a special 1:15 p.m. first post. The 140th Kentucky Derby will be simulcast at 3:24 p.m. (Pacific), between races four and five at Emerald Downs. . .Del Rio Harbor, the track’s best 2-year-old last year, makes his 2014 debut Sunday in a $22,575 allowance race at 5 ½ furlongs.
