    MAX COOPER SCORES IN COCA-COLA PURSE,
    BECOMES MEET’S FIRST FOUR-TIME WINNER

    AUBURN, Wash. (July 13, 2013) – Max Cooper gained the lead on the last turn and held off Uzziah for a three-quarter-length victory Saturday in the $10,500 Coca-Cola Purse for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs.

    With Juan Gutierrez riding, Max Cooper ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.25 and paid $2.80, $2.10 and $2.10. Jeff Metz is the trainer for owner Constance Barns.

    The victory was a collaboration of all three leaders at the 2013 meeting: Gutierrez tops the jockeys’ standings with 60 wins, Metz is first in the trainers’ standings with 24 wins, and Max Cooper became the first horse with four wins at the meeting.

    A 5-year-old Florida-bred, Max Cooper is 4-0-1 in six starts this season with earnings of $21,687. Overall, the gelding is 7-5-7 in 31 starts with earnings of $104,487.

    Uzziah, ridden by Eliska Kubinova, made a late charge while drifting out through the stretch, but settled for second place and paid $3 and $2.10. It was two lengths back to M Two Forty, ridden by Anne Sanguinetti, and a $2.10 show payoff.

    La Capitana finished fourth and Advancement, the early leader, faded to finish fifth.

    Gutierrez and Isaias Enriquez rode two winners apiece, and Gutierrez leads Enriquez 60-58 in the jockeys’ standings.

    NOTES: Lorenzo Lopez also rode two winners—one Thoroughbred and one Quarter Horse—including the day’s biggest surprise aboard 2-year-old filly Zafari Nation ($29) for trainer Larry Pierce in race three…Doris Harwood was the only trainer with two wins and is tied with Charles Essex for fifth place at 18 wins apiece…Chu and You ($6.60), full sister to 2011 Emerald Downs’ Top Juvenile Chu and I, romped to a 5 ¾-length victory in race four for owner/breeder Mike & Amy Feuerborn and trainer Robbie Baze. A 2-year-old filly by You and I-Bronze Charmer, Chu and You ran five furlongs in :57.60 under Juan Gutierrez…A race later, 2-year-old gelding Del Rio Harbor ($8.80), a full brother to 2011 Emerald Downs’ Top Juvenile Couldabenthewhisky, prevailed narrowly over Smart Copy in :58.84 for five furlongs. Rocco Bowen was up for Harwood and owners Bar C Racing Stables & Desert Rose Racing LLCSun City ($2.80) notched career victory No. 20 in Saturday’s second race, re-rallying to edge Lizzy Lass by a head in 1:39.96 for one mile. The 9-year-old Washington-bred mare is 20-25-16 in 99 career starts with earnings of $173,631 for owners Joe and Kari ToyeShe’s a Tiger, bred by Dr. Rodney Orr and co-owned by Dr. Mark Dedomenico prevailed as the 3-to-5 favorite in the $150,000 Landaluce Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Betfair Hollywood Park…Live racing continues Sunday with first post 2 p.m. A stakes doubleheader for 3-year-olds features the $50,000 Seattle Slew Handicap for colts & geldings and the $50,000 Kent Handicap for fillies. Music of My Soul, undefeated around two turns, is the 7-to-5 morning line favorite in the Seattle Slew, and Stopshoppingdebbie, unbeaten and untested in three career starts, is the 1-to-2 morning line favorite in the Kent Handicap…Sunday also features the annual Star 101.5 Kent & Alan Wiener Dog Races…Sunday is closing day of the 2013 Betfair Hollywood Park Spring/Summer Meeting and features a mandatory payout in the Pick Six.
