    Jockey Anne Sanguinetti

For jockeys, it’s never easy acquiring new business in a sport known for its strong loyalty and fierce competition. Anne Sanguinetti, however, has already started to turn heads and make favorable impressions in her first full season at Emerald Downs.

Born in Michigan but raised in the Bay Area, Sanguinetti has thrived in her new role as first-call rider for leading trainer and fellow Emerald Downs’ newcomer Jeff Metz. Both are hoping to become mainstays here, but it can be considerably more difficult for a jockey to gain momentum in new surroundings, since returning riders normally have inroads to the bigger barns.

Together, however, Metz and Sanguinetti have benefited from each other’s open books to start the season. In fact, they lead all jockey-trainer combinations with 15 wins at the meet and could catch trainer Tim McCanna and jockey Ricky Frazier who combined to win 35 races in 2009. Metz, who sits atop the trainers’ standings with 21 (Thoroughbred) wins, said Sanguinetti has been great to work with.

“Anne is such a pleasure to have around the barn,” Metz said. “I didn’t know anybody up here, and I wanted somebody in my corner. She’s been terrific.”

Sanguinetti’s hot start has parlayed itself into new business with other Emerald Downs trainers. Last week, for example, Sanguinetti rode four winners for four different trainers en route to her first Jockey of the Week selection. The 32-year-old pilot enters the week sixth in the standings with 19 wins, and she has 13 mounts scheduled with seven different trainers this week. Modest and soft-spoken (although her winning song is Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin) Sanguinetti has begun to see the results of her success.

“Any time you go some place new, you have to prove yourself,” she said. “Now I’m starting to work for some other barns and trainers are giving me a shot on their horses.”

Sanguinetti’s foray into race riding began in 2004 when she galloped horses for renowned trainer and former Eclipse Award-winning rider Wesley Ward at Hollywood Park. Simultaneously, Sanguinetti studied Economics at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. Insistent that she turn professional, Ward pleaded with Sanguinetti to start her riding career while still in school.

“He kept begging me and begging me to ride in a race,” Sanguinetti said. “I told him that I have to graduate before I ride a horse.”

True to her word, Sanguinetti graduated on a Saturday without riding a single race, but the very next day had her first mount and as she put it, “never looked back.”

Rocky's Quest should prove tough to beat in Sunday's feature race

Rocky’s Quest, the meet’s Top Claimer of 2012, heads a field of seven tough older runners entered in Sunday’s featured $19,950 allowance/optional claiming event at one mile.

Coming off a rare clunker in the June 16 Budweiser Handicap—his first out-of-the-money finish in over a year—Rocky’s Quest appears to hold a class edge over his six rivals Sunday. In fact, the 5-year-old gelding would routinely handle fields like this one last year, when was 5-2-1 in eight starts and bankrolled $53,718 for John and Janene Maryanski.

With regular rider Juan Gutierrez up for trainer Blaine Wright, Rocky’s Quest figures a good trip with his ability to track what figures to be a fast pace.

Touch the Sun and Memphis Beach both have recorded fast wins this season at Emerald Downs, but could wind up in an early pace duel Sunday. Perfect Night, a full brother to Wasserman, stretches out and steps way up in class following a nice maiden win June 1.

Edge Forward has been facing tougher foes but is unproven around two turns. Ditto for Sandys Diamond, although the 5-year-old gelding has been a steady customer in sprints with a 1-2-0 record in four starts at the meet.

The field from the rail out for Saturday’s $19,950 feature for 3-year-olds and up which have never won two races other than maiden, claiming or starter or which have never won three races, or claiming price $32,000: Rocky’s Quest, Juan Gutierrez, 124 lbs; Perfect Night, Jennifer Whitaker, 124; Sandys Diamond, Javier Matias, 124; Edge Forward, David G. Lopez, 124; Memphis Beach, Leonel Camacho-Flores, 124; M Two Forty, Anne Sanguinetti, 124; Touch the Sun, Isaias Enriquez, 124.

Emerald Downs continues it’s monthly Emerald AM program on Saturday with a jockey-themed edition, followed by a free tram ride touring the track stable area.

Located on the track apron, the two-hour show begins at 9 a.m. and includes free admission to the day’s races, free coffee, snacks and an Official Program

Hosted by Track Announcer Robert Geller and Media Relations’ Jacob Pollowitz, Saturday’s Emerald AM will feature jockeys David Lopez and Debbie Hoonan and a special appearance from the recently retired stakes winner You Me and Ema B and her trainer Margo Lloyd. You Me and Ema B, ridden by Hoonan in all seven career starts, earned Top Older Filly or Mare honors in 2011.

During the show, race fans will have a perfect opportunity to watch Thoroughbreds in training, followed by a visit through jockeys’ quarters, which includes a first-class locker room, jockeys lounge, silks room and more.

The remaining Emerald AM’s are July 27 and August 31.
