Awesome Gem returns to Emerald Downs to defend title in Longacres Mile

DEFENDING CHAMP AWESOME GEM 5-TO-2 FAVORITE

AS 11 ENTERED IN $200,000 LONGACRES MILE (G3)

West Point Thoroughbreds’ 9-year-old Awesome Gem seeks to become the oldest horse to win the Longacres Mile when Emerald Downs presents the 77th running of the Grade 3, $200,000 classic on Sunday, August 19.

A field of 11 was drawn Wednesday with Awesome Gem and jockey David Flores drawing the No. 3 post-position, a big improvement from last year when the son of Awesome Again overcame the No. 11 post to defeat Noosa Beach by 1-½ lengths in 1:34-4/5. With earnings of $2,851,370, Awesome Gem will break his own record as the richest horse ever to compete in the state.

Awesome Gem is the 5-to-2 favorite on Rob Rao’s morning line with CRK Stable’s Gladding second choice at 3-to-1.

“He’s training wonderfully going into the race,” trainer Craig Dollase said of Awesome Again. “He’s probably as good or better than last year. He’s a gem, that’s for sure.”

Awesome Gem and Gladding are scheduled to ship together from Del Mar late Thursday evening and arrive at Emerald Downs at 4 a.m. Friday. They will van from Del Mar to LAX, where they will board a flight to Sea-Tac, and then take a van to Emerald Downs.

The Blaine Wright-trained Hudson Landing is 5-to-1 and the Keith Nations-trained Bailouttheminister is 6-to-1. The former is on a roll, winning four of six since being claimed by Jared Chappell including the Mt. Rainier Handicap at Emerald Downs. The latter comes off a sprint stakes win in Northern California and gets Hall of Famer Russell Baze as jockey.

Taylor Said and St Liams Halo, both owned by Glen Todd’s North American Thoroughbred Racing Company, drew the No. 10 and No. 11 post-positions. Kentucky Derby/Preakness Stakes winning jockey Mario Gutierrez rides Taylor Said, a 4-year-old winner of four straight stakes who seeks to become the first horse since 1970 to win The Mile after making his previous start in Vancouver.

“Everything has been wonderful this year,” Gutierrez said at The Mile draw brunch. “I’m glad to have so many people behind me. Right now we’re focused on The Mile, and I think we have a pretty good shot. I wish everyone luck.”

Fleur De Lis Stable’s Winning Machine is a double stakes winner this season for trainer Frank Lucarelli and appears to be the top local hope, although Ron and Rosalie Warren's Jebrica appears to be coming into the race in fine order for five-time Mile-winning trainer Jim Penney.

Randall & Rossi’s Gallant Son and Tice Ranch Stables Assessment both have back class but need form reversals. Gallant Son was Emerald Downs’ Top 2-Year-Old in 2008 and is a multiple stakes winner on turf in Southern California, while Assessment won The Mile in 2009 en route to Horse of the Meeting honors.

Three Mile winning trainers have runners led by five-time winner Jim Penney and two-time winner Howard Belvoir, along with one-time winner Craig Dollase.
    • With the mount on Bailouttheminister, Hall of Fame Jockey Russell Baze rides in his 11th straight Longacres Mile. North America’s all-time leader with 11,765 wins, Baze also is slated for induction Sunday into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame, with Paul George and long-time KOMO-TV Sports Director Bruce King leading the ceremony in the winner’s circle.

Class Included looks tough heading into Sunday's Emerald Distaff

CLASS INCLUDED HEADS PENNEY TRIO IN $65,000 EMERALD DISTAFF

As the great Charlie Whittingham used to say when entering one of his multiple-horse entries in a big stakes race, “We got ’em surrounded.”

In the case of Sunday’s $65,000 Emerald Distaff, Washington Hall of Fame trainer Jim Penney will play the role of Whittingham with of three of the five entrants in the 1-1/8-mile event which goes as Race 6 on the Mile card.

Michael and Amy Feuerborn’s Class Included is the 1-to-2 morning line favorite and foremost among the Penney trio. The 4-year-old Include filly already has a stranglehold on the older filly and mare division with two wins and a second in three stakes outings at the meet. Her lifetime record is 7-6-0 in 13 starts with earnings of $256,823. A victory would make her the first filly since Shampoo in 2007-08 to win back-to-back honors as Top 3-Year-Old Filly and Top Older Filly or Mare.

Class Included is ridden by Juan Gutierrez and carries 122 lbs, five more than both stable mate Sweet Nellie Brown and E Z Kitty.

“I know it’s deserved, but my top concern is that we’ll be spotting five pounds to the rest of the field,” Feuerborn said. “This race is kind of special to me because I’ve never won it before. If she wins, this race could be in the mix for one of the greatest races in her career."

Tige Too Racing Stable’s E Z Kitty defeated Class Included in the Washington State Legislators Handicap at 6-½ furlongs and is six-for-10 lifetime and a double stakes winner. She finished a distant fifth to Class Included in the July 8 Boeing Handicap at one mile, however, and is likely to revert to front-running tactics in the Distaff.
