MEMO TO MYA: YOUR HORSE CAN RUN

AUBURN, Wash. (July 3, 2012) – Memo to Mya held off a wall of closers and scored a 2- ¼-length victory Tuesday in the $14,375 feature race for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by apprentice Eliska Kubinova, Memo to Mya ran six furlongs in 1:09.50 and paid $18.60, $7 and $3.80. Jonathan Nance is the trainer for owner breeder James Garrett of Boise, Idaho, who named the gelding after his granddaughter.

The victory was the 100th for Kubinova, a 23-year-old Czech who began riding in North America last August. Kubinova ranks fourth with 37 wins at the current meeting, and remains on pace to break the track record of 70 wins by an apprentice set by Cassie Papineau in 2009.

Frenzo, the 6-to-5 betting favorite ridden by Javier Matias, rallied to finish second and paid $3.40 and $2.60 for place and show. It was a head back to Big Bad Jim, the 3-to-1 second choice ridden by Debbie Hoonan, and a $2.60 show payoff.

Exclusive Jim, Princess Campbell and Postulate completed the order of finish.

A 4-year-old Idaho-bred by Cobra King-Memo Bay, Memo to Mya has 2-4-2 record in 16 starts overall and earnings of $34,956.

MAWING, LUCARELLI WIN THREE IN A ROW

Jockey Leslie Mawing and trainer Frank Lucarelli combined to win three straight races—the third, fourth and fifth—and are a combined 15-for 34 this season at Emerald Downs. A victory by Single N Lovin It in the fourth race—The Tony Lucarelli Memorial Purse—was especially meaningful for Lucarelli since the race was named in honor of the trainer’s late son who died of brain cancer.

Since June 17, Lucarelli has won with 12 of 18 starters including a triumph by Winning Machine in the $50,000 Budweiser Handicap, and Lucarelli leads Tim McCanna 27-22 in the trainers’ standings.

Mawing added a fourth win with a victory on Showboat Gambler ($12) in the eighth race has surged into second place with 42 wins. The defending riding champion, Mawing has ridden multiple winners the last five racing days.

Leading rider Juan Gutierrez had three wins of his own, and remains atop the standings with 46 wins.

    REMINDER: NO LIVE RACING WEDNESDAY

The annual Fireworks Spectacular presented by Carl’s Jr followed Tuesday’s 10-race program. There is no live racing at Emerald Downs on Wednesday, July 4.

Live racing resumes Friday with first post 6:15 p.m. Emerald Downs is open for simulcast wagering Wednesday and Thursday.

NOTES: With a victory in the second race Ever Ready Carrie ($3.40) became the eighth winner out of the dam Carrie Can, a list that includes multiple graded stakes winner Harvard Avenue ($606,345). A 1992 foal, Carrie Can, by Saratoga Six, won 10-of 40 including three stakes and $309,652…Victories by Ever Ready Carrie and fifth-race winner Lo’s in the Flow ($3.40) gave owner-breeder Ron Crockett a two-for-two evening…The seventh race might have been a $2,500 claiming race for non-winners of two races lifetime, but the event didn’t lack for drama. Just Jokin Around ($5) and Disco D ($5.40) produced the meet’s third dead-heat for win, both running one mile in 1:38.95. And in the same race, third-place finisher Evil Urges was disqualified and placed fourth for interference leaving the starting gate, with Mel and Al moved up from fourth to third place.
