West Seattle Boy and jockey Gallyn Mitchell

When your name is West Seattle Boy and you’ve won a record 21 races at Emerald Downs, the track will salute you with a slew of special activities.

That will be the case Saturday as Emerald Downs’ officially retires the now 13-year-old gelding that between 2001 and 2011 won 21 races and $166,850.

The festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. when West Seattle Boy, trainer Rigoberto Velasquez and owners Lisa Baze and Jerry Carmody make appearances in the paddock at the free Emerald AM morning workout show. Velasquez will be atop West Seattle Boy while track announcer Robert Geller and Jacob Pollowitz interview Baze and Carmody about their horse. Incidentally, West Seattle Boy will be sporting the gorgeous new western saddle bought by Carmody to help the gelding transition into a new role as a pony horse.

Saturday’s sixth race is named “The West Seattle Boy Classic” and at approximately 4:30 p.m., as the horses parade to post for the sixth race, West Seattle Boy will be paraded from the paddock to the winner’s circle and make his 22nd and final appearance in the area he has visited more than any horse in track history. Gallyn Mitchell, the leading rider in Emerald Downs’ history with 1,337 wins including five on West Seattle Boy, will be interviewed in the winner’s circle for his West Seattle Boy remembrances, as will Baze, Carmody and Velasquez.

In addition, Emerald Downs will give away 2,500 posters to paid admissions, featuring all 21 of West Seattle Boy’s Emerald Downs’ wins, and the TV department has prepared a special video tribute for the bay gelding.

The stakes schedule for 2-year-olds at Emerald Downs begins Sunday with the $25,000 NWSS Slewdledo Stakes for colts and geldings and the $25,000 NWSS Son of Briartic Stakes for fillies, both at five furlongs.

To be eligible to compete in the Northwest Stallion Stakes, all foals must be sired by nominated stallions and be individually nominated to the Northwest Race Series NWRS.

Master’s Bluff, the field’s most accomplished runner, showed promise in his June 16 debut, finishing third in a maiden allowance despite pressing the pace four-wide. Trainer Dave Bennett said should improve after his last effort.

“I think my horse has a good shot because he’s got a race under his belt,” Bennett said. “However, I’m concerned about (Jim) Penney’s horse (He’s Not Bluffin) because he shows the best works. He might be tough to outrun.”

He’s Not Bluffin could be aptly named if his morning workouts translate well into the afternoon. A son of Raise the Bluff, He’s Not Bluffin has posted two bullet works, including his most recent gate drill—a five-furlong workout in :58 2/5 (1/21).

In the Son of Briartic, Valid Vixen Queen from the Neil Knapp barn is the field’s only experienced runner. The daughter of Harbor the Gold rallied to finish third in her only career start—a $12,500 maiden claimer on June 15.

While there appears to be no standouts, first-time starter Go Jackie Go merits respect based on connections and pedigree. Her trainer, Tim McCanna, has won this race three times at Emerald Downs including last year with Youtheprizeandi. And the dam, Go for Jackie, produced 2010 WTBOA Champion 3-Year-Old Slew the Man.

The field for the 34th running of the NWSS Son of Briartic Stakes at 117 lbs. (race seven, 5:09 p.m.): 1, Kathi’s Road, William Antongeorgi; 2, House of Hope, Juan Gutierrez; 3, Supersymmetry, Javier Matias; 4, Dakota Demon, Rocco Bowen; 5, Valid Vixen Queen, Debbie Hoonan; 6, Go Jackie Go, Leslie Mawing.

The field for the 34th running of the NWSS Slewdledo Stakes at 118 lbs. (race nine, 6:09 p.m.): 1, He’s Not Bluffin, Gutierrez; 2, Off Harbor Account, Jose Zunino; 3, Willy B Gold, Louis Zacherle; 4, Master’s Bluff, Rocco Bowen; 5, Harbor Star, Jennifer Whitaker; 6, Galway Guinness, Eliska Kubinova.

The annual “Fireworks Spectacular presented by Carl’s Jr.” – one of the most popular fireworks shows in the Pacific Northwest – returns to Emerald Downs this Tuesday following the live racing program Special first post time is 4:30 p.m., with entries for Tuesday’s card to be drawn Friday. The Fireworks Spectacular will begin approx. 30 minutes after the final race.

Early weather reports for Tuesday are favorable: partly sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 60s.

Seattle’s most famous gardener—KING-5’s Ciscoe Morris—will be at the track Friday morning to shoot a segment for an upcoming episode of Gardening with Ciscoe”.

Morris and crew will shoot a segment on the Rainy Rose Society and their hundreds of rose varieties in their garden north of the paddock, and also intros and outros for upcoming episodes. According to spokesperson Ann Erickson, the episode featuring the Rainy Rose Society airs at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 21 on KING-5, with replays at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on KONG and 1 p.m., Sunday, July 22 on Northwest Cable News.

NOTES: Week 11 honors: Jockey-Gallyn Mitchell (15-4-3-1); Trainer-Tom Wenzel (6-4-0-0); Owner-West Coast Racing LLC (3-1-0-1); Groom-Fernando Ochoa (Wenzel); Washington Bred-Sun City (breeder Terra Firma Farm)…In becoming the meet’s first four-time winner, Go With Gusto earned a career-high 85 Beyer for his half-length win in the slop last Saturday. The 7-year-old gelding ran one mile in 1:35.71…In the stakes ranks, Makors Finale was given an 83 for his three-quarter-length victory over D’honorable One in the Coca-Cola Handicap, down a point from his previous victory in the Auburn Handicap. And Exclusive Diva got a 75 for her three-quarter-length triumph over Royal Moses in the Irish Day Handicap, which was down six from her win in the Seattle Handicap. Nevertheless, Wenzel was very pleased with the race, especially with the way she overcame early challenges from both Lady Hokulea and Talk to My Lawyer…Wenzel is 4-2-0 in seven stakes starts at the meet, and he became the first trainer to win two stakes on a non-Washington Cup day…Sunday’s fourth installment of Emerald Ed features John Lindley discussing the art of trip handicapping. The free show begins at noon in the Emerald Room and sign-up including a free official program is available at emeralddowns.com…Although Emerald Downs will be open for live racing Tuesday, the track will be dark Wednesday, July 4. The facility will be open for simulcasting Wednesday including cards from Belmont Park and Hollywood Park…Frank Lucarelli, on pace to win his second straight training title, has won with seven of his last eight starters and built a 22-19 lead over both Howard Belvoir and Tim McCanna.
