Italian Boy winning his third straight in Saturday's feature race

AUBURN, Wash. (June 16, 2012) – Italian Boy is a 3-year-old on the rise at Emerald Downs.

The 3-year-old son of Tizbud made it two straight this season and three straight overall with a snappy 3-¾-length victory Saturday in the $18,000 feature race for 3-year-old allowance/optional claimers. With William Antongeorgi riding for trainer Tim McCanna, Italian Boy ran six furlongs in 1:08.61 and paid $2.20, $2.20 and $2.10.

Italian Boy reeled in War Wizard past mid-stretch and drew off to win with complete authority. The Washington-bred colt has won his two starts this season by a combined 11-¼- lengths, and including a 9-¼ maiden length victory last July, has won his last three starts by an aggregate 20-½ lengths.

War Wizard, ridden by Leslie Mawing, held second place and paid $4.20 and $3.60. Also bidding for a third straight win, the Songandaprayer gelding led through fractions of :21.11 and :43.53, entered the lane with a one-length lead, but couldn’t hold off Italian Boy and settled for second place.

It was 1-¼ lengths back to Harbor Wind, ridden by Jorge Rosales, and a $3.80 show payoff. Tough Road Ahead, Red Colt Fortyfive and Power Fleet completed the order of finish.

Bred and owned by DiPietro Thoroughbreds (Luigi and Diana DiPietro), Italian Boy is 3-1-1 in five career starts with earnings of $31,730, including a $9,900 check for Saturday’s triumph. Including a victory by their swift 4-year-old gelding Hayjax, DiPietro Thoroughbreds has won three-of-five starters at the meet.

NOTES: It was a big afternoon for owners/breeders Michael and Amy Feuerborn, as their broodmare Bianconi Baby produced two winners on the card including an impressive triumph in the season’s first maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds. Scat Daddybaby (by Scat Daddy-Bianconi Baby) held off Finallygotabentley by three-quarters-of-a-length in :51.50 for 4-½ furlongs. And in the eighth race, an $18,000 allowance event for older fillies and mares, 5-year-old Include the Baby (by Include-Bianconi Baby) drew off to win easily in 1:09.12 for six furlongs. Jim Penney trains both Scat Daddybaby and Include the Baby, and Juan Gutierrez rode both winners and now leads the meet with 34 winners, five better than both Leonel Camacho-Flores and Eliska Kubinova …The victory by Italian Boy pulled McCanna within one win of Howard Belvoir in the trainers’ race. Belvoir leads 18-17, with Frank Lucarelli in third with 15 wins. Those three trainers also rank first, second and third all-time at Emerald Downs—McCanna, 825; Lucarelli 691; Belvoir 579…Justanother Bob ($5) was placed first in race five, as Mel and Al crossed the wire first but was disqualified and placed second for interference in the stretch run…Hard Slider prevailed in the eighth race, running six furlongs in a brisk 1:08.37 and posted the meet’s most symmetrical payoffs to date—$20 to win, $10 to place and $5 to show. Leslie Mawing rode the winner, career victory No. 1,950 for Emerald Downs’ defending riding champion…Live racing continues Sunday with a 10-race card at 2 p.m. Noosa Beach is the 8-to-5 morning line favorite in the $50,000 Budweiser Handicap at one mile.
