THAT’S A MY BOY! LUIGI’S RUNNER SCORES
AUBURN, Wash. (June 16, 2012) – Italian Boy is a 3-year-old on the rise at Emerald Downs.
The 3-year-old son of Tizbud made it two straight this season and three straight overall with a snappy 3-¾-length victory Saturday in the $18,000 feature race for 3-year-old allowance/optional claimers. With William Antongeorgi riding for trainer Tim McCanna, Italian Boy ran six furlongs in 1:08.61 and paid $2.20, $2.20 and $2.10.
Italian Boy reeled in War Wizard past mid-stretch and drew off to win with complete authority. The Washington-bred colt has won his two starts this season by a combined 11-¼- lengths, and including a 9-¼ maiden length victory last July, has won his last three starts by an aggregate 20-½ lengths.
War Wizard, ridden by Leslie Mawing, held second place and paid $4.20 and $3.60. Also bidding for a third straight win, the Songandaprayer gelding led through fractions of :21.11 and :43.53, entered the lane with a one-length lead, but couldn’t hold off Italian Boy and settled for second place.
It was 1-¼ lengths back to Harbor Wind, ridden by Jorge Rosales, and a $3.80 show payoff. Tough Road Ahead, Red Colt Fortyfive and Power Fleet completed the order of finish.
Bred and owned by DiPietro Thoroughbreds (Luigi and Diana DiPietro), Italian Boy is 3-1-1 in five career starts with earnings of $31,730, including a $9,900 check for Saturday’s triumph. Including a victory by their swift 4-year-old gelding Hayjax, DiPietro Thoroughbreds has won three-of-five starters at the meet.
