California-bred mare (b. 2002)
By Swiss Yodeler-Wasmi Song
Career (2005): 7-M-0-2, $2,683
According to 16-year-old Shay Stenchever, Alpine Song is a gentle giant living the good life in tiny Sultan, Washington. And the 11-year-old mare is proof that success isn’t measured only by wins on the racetrack.
“She’s a big fat happy camper,” Stenchever said of Alpine Song. “She’s so massive, people think she’s a draft horse.”
Acquired for $200 by Stenchever and her mother, Alyssa, at the 2012 WTBOA September Yearling & Mixed Sale, Alpine Song is one of 11 horses living in two pastures behind the Stenchever’s house in Sultan, located on the Skykomish River in east Snohomish County.
Just beginning her junior year at Sultan High School, Stenchever is a Thoroughbred enthusiast with a high acumen for facts and figures. She’s even picked a few winners as a regular handicapper on the CSN show Emerald Downs Live.
While living and interacting with horses like Alpine Song, Stenchever has developed a deep appreciation for Thoroughbreds. “I think they are magnificent animals,” Stenchever said. “It’s their world and we get the privilege of being around them.
Alpine Song was winless in seven starts in 2005 at Emerald Downs, her best finish a close third in a six-furlong maiden test. However, there is quality in her blood; sire Swiss Yodeler won the 1996 Hollywood Futurity (G1) and dam Wasmi Song finished second in the 1995 Landaluce Stakes (G2). And indeed the breeding shed is where Alpine Song has enjoyed success.
Bogachiel (12-3-3-1-$45,231) and Grab the Goods (10-4-1-2-$19,665) share identical Harbor the Gold-Alpine Song bloodlines. A 6-year-old gelding, Bogachiel earned an 89 Beyer in a 6 ½-furlong race at Emerald Downs and finished third in the 2010 Chinook Pass Stakes. A 4-year-old filly, Grab the Goods sold for $23,000 as a yearling and was a triple winner at Emerald Downs in 2012.
Another progeny of Harbor the Gold-Alpine Song, 3-year-old gelding Willy B Gold, sold for $14,000 as a yearling and was third in the 2012 Slewdledo Stakes. Alpine Song has one final runner, a weanling by Sixthirteen currently with the Stenchever’s whom we could see at the races in 2015.
