MEMPHIS MOBSTER LEADS ALL THE WAY,
    SCORES POPULAR FEATURE RACE VICTORY

AUBURN, Wash. (July 5) – Memphis Mobster and leading rider Leslie Mawing powered to a 3 ¾-length victory Saturday in the featured Quality Inn Pacific Purse for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs.

Trained by Doris Harwood for owners Michael Pollowitz and Jeff Wilson, Memphis Mobster ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.09 on a fast track and paid $3.60 and $2.40.

Surprise Sale, with Eliska Kubinova riding, finished second and paid $3.20, while Free Beer and Won Won Oh Five completed the order of finish. Doctor Bruce S. was a late scratch at the starting gate.

Memphis Mobster dictated the pace from start to finish, setting fractions of :24.42, :47.70, 1:11.55 and 1:35.46, en route to his first victory in six starts at the meeting. A 7-year-old California-bred gelding by Memo, Memphis Mobster is 12-6-3 in 43 lifetime starts with earnings of $90,562

For Mawing, it was his second win Saturday and extended his lead to 49-40 over Rocco Bowen in the jockeys’ standings. The 40-year-old rider already has 12 multiple win days this season.

Harwood, meanwhile, has 10 wins at the meet and needs four wins to become only the fifth trainer to win 500 races at Emerald Downs. She also ranks No. 1 with 63 stakes wins.

NOTES: Memphis Mobster was re-claimed for $7,500 Saturday by owner Rancho Viejo and trainer Rigoberto Velasquez. . .Trainer Jim Penney made it seven straight racing days with at least a victory as 3-year-old filly That’s What It Is ($2.80) broke her maiden by seven lengths in race two. Penney, who celebrated his 80th birthday Friday, has four horses entered Sunday including Madame Pele in the $50,000 Boeing Handicap for older fillies and mares. . .Betting favorites swept the first six races before Power Fleet ($12) and Eliska Kubniova prevailed as the fourth choice in the race seven finale. Dean Mazzuca, who earlier Saturday hosted the first edition of Breakfast at the Wire earlier, owns Power Fleet. . .Cadenza ($4.20) overcame a slow start to score a last-to-first debut victory in race three for Benchmark 28 and trainer Chris Stenslie. A 2-year-old gelding by Private Gold-Slew Tunes, Cadenza ran 4 ½ furlongs in :52.24 under jockey Rocco Bowen. . .Jockey David G. Lopez was given a two-day suspension, Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12, for causing interference aboard runner-up Game Kick in Thursday’s ninth race. . .
