CITY BY THE BAY PREVAILS IN SEATTLE HANDICAP,
EDGES CHU AND YOU TO REMAIN UNBEATEN

AUBURN, Wash. (June 1) – California shipper City by the Bay remained undefeated Sunday with a brisk three-quarter-length victory over a stubborn Chu and You in the $50,000 Seattle Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez at 119 lbs, City by the Bay ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:14.76 and paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.10. The winner, who was making her first start since an 8 ¾-length victory in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante last September, is trained by Billy Morey for Martin Bach of Danville, Calif. and Jack Owens of Modesto, Calif.

Now 3-for-3 lifetime, City by the Bay earned $27,500 to push her bankroll to $97,670. Based at Golden Gate Fields, the Kentucky-bred daughter of City Zip has notched wins at Santa Rosa, Fairplex Park and Emerald Downs.

Chu and You rebounded from a sub-par effort last month in Canada and gave the winner a stern challenge through the stretch. Last year’s champion 2-year-old filly at Emerald Downs, Chu and You led through fractions of :22 for the quarter-mile and :44.34 for the half, and responded gamely through the lane to just miss.

Ridden by Juan Gutierrez at 120 lbs, Chu and You paid $7 and $5.

Mylast Sweet Pea, a 50-to-1 long shot ridden by Gallyn Mitchell at 115 lbs, rallied to finish third and paid $9.20.

Robbie Baze trains both Chu and You and Mylast Sweet Pea.

Lotta Attitude, the 3-to-1 second choice, finished fourth, and was followed by Strawberry Dawn, Sunpenny, Just a Love and Belladiva.

City by the Bay, in fourth place early, moved up three-wide to take command into the stretch, and gradually edged away from Chu and You.

“I thought she could win this race, but I didn’t think it would be easy,” said Hernandez, second leading rider at Golden Gate. “I asked her a little before the quarter-pole because I didn’t want (Chu and You) to try and get away from us.

“This was my filly’s first time here, so I had to make sure to really get after her so she knew when to go. She responded really well. I was worried that we might finish second because the filly on the inside looked like she was never going to give up, but my horse didn’t quit.”

Dancing Yodeler(between horses) battles gamely to finish third in his EmD debut.

DANCING YODELER RUNS WELL IN EMERALD DEBUT

In his first race for the Emerald Racing Club, Dancing Yodeler finished a game third under jockey Felipe Valdez for trainers Larry and Sharon Ross. The 6-year-old Swiss Yodeler gelding was rewarded with a big ovation as he returned to be unsaddled, with many of the 128 Emerald Racing Club members viewing and taking pictures from the rail. Hard Slider ($11.40) won the $5,000 claiming race in by 5 ½ lengths in a blistering 1:08.53 for six furlongs.
