SHE’S A TIGER WINS 2-YEAR-OLD FILLY TITLE
She’s a Tiger did her Northwest roots proud Saturday night in Miami, winning the Eclipse Award as the nation’s Champion 2-Year-Old Filly of 2013.
A bay Kentucky-bred by Tale of the Cat-Shandra Smiles, She’s a Tiger has several ties to both the Northwest and Emerald Downs:
The bay filly is co-owned and wears the fluorescent pink silks of Dr. Mark Dedomenico of Pegasus Training and Equine Rehabilitation Center. In fact, She’s a Tiger began her training at the magnificent Redmond facility and recorded her first official workout there last March.
Dr. Rodney Orr, breeder of She’s a Tiger, is a familiar face at Emerald Downs where his runners have won 62 races over the years including six winners in 2013. He was among a group of four men who brought two-time Longacres Mile-winning sire Cahill Road to Washington in 1997.
Before she turned into a blue-hen mare, Shandra Smiles gave Orr his first stakes win as an owner, scoring a 3 ¾-length victory in the 2001 Federal Way Handicap at Emerald Downs, As a broodmare, Shandra Smiles has produced seven runners topped by She’s a Tiger and Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger. Datura (Salt Lake-Shandra Smiles) won races at Emerald Downs in 2007 and 2009, and 4-year-old Next Right (Orientate-Shandra Smiles) is currently training at Santa Anita.
Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, the regular rider on She’s a Tiger, also is a Northwest native and began his amazing comeback by breezing several horses at Pegasus in late 2012.
